> A Look Back at 2007: The Year of Linux (24.12.2007)

2007 for me personally has been the year where Linux on the Desktop became a reality but before I get into this check out the videos from my new years party. It turned out to be quite a good start to the year!

January
One of my first posts this year in January was about me trying Linux; openSuse 10.2 to be exact.

February
In February the month started off well. It was snowing in London and I sold some items on eBay. (also it was my birthday!) However things started to rapidly go down hill when I realised my university give out free copies of Vista. I debated installing it and just after surprising a very special person for Valentines Day I went ahead with it. Luckily my trip into the ‘Wow’ was delayed as the product key I was given from my university was wrong! I also got my bag stolen towards the end of Febuary. Luckily the two most annoying things that were stolen was a 2GB USB stick and a jumper!

March
March was an exceptionally quiet/busy month with me blogging very little. This could have been because my PC was running very slow from having Vista installed on it! ;-) It is interesting to note that I blogged very little about installing Vista. It obviously didn’t impress me much! However my site was advertised slightly in a lecture at university.

April
However by the end of April I was back blogging and the big news was that I was finally planning to redesign my blog/website. HughsWebWorld (as it was called at the beginning of the year) was about to become HughsWebWorld 2.0 and in the end Hugh’s Space. Welcome to the Web 2.0!

May
May was the month that was to start a phenomenon with me installing Linux Ubuntu. I had some problems with openSuse after I upgraded my grahpics cards (to get the sexy looks of Vista although I later found these to be available on Ubuntu anyway…although I don’t know if Compiz-Fusion would have worked on my old graphics card.). The day after I installed Ubuntu Dell followed me and said they will start shipping it on their PCs! Later in May Hugh’s Space became a reality and the Cutty Sark had just been through a major fire.

June
June was a busy blogging month! I updated Hugh’s Space to work with a new WordPress Theme. Also I found out the disappointing news that the JADE Summer meeting had been cancelled. This was extremely displeasing as I had been organising some new WBC members to join us. It was slightly embarrassing that the network couldn’t even organise a conference that was supposed to be a celebration of 40 years of the JE concept and 15 years of JADE. I also added more content to YouTube by adding some of my major holiday videos to compliment the photos. In addition I found time to show off the Compiz efects in Ubuntu! ;-)

July
In July the iPhone had already been released (in the US) and already some crazy Americans were smashing the thing up! Also the trip to Paris went ahead even though the conference had been cancelled. We had a good few days in Paris but to add insult to injury, I lost my camera with all the photos near the end so the few photos I have are from my camera phone which really don’t do Paris justice. At the end of the month I went to Dublin. The Guinness factory tour was the best part!! ;-)

August
By August I had caught the Facebook bug. I finally got so annoyed by all those invitations that were emailed to me, that I just had to join! On the 21st of August my Eastern European Adventure began! This involved flying to Krakow, Poland (with all my luggage for one year) and then boarding a train to Kiev in the Ukraine for a week, only to return to Krakow and begin my one year work placement. The photos from Kiev were put online on the 30th of August 2007. This trip to the Ukraine rounded of my major travelling for the year. I went to three new countries this year: France (twice; Paris and Marseilles), Ireland (Dublin) and Ukraine (Kiev).

September
September was a quieter/busier month. I attended the Annual Sausage Dog parade here in Krakow and published some photos from this event. I also got all the photos from major holidays and put them back online with a new interface. Ubuntu also had a new beta version out that I was tempted to try.

October
In October I had almost become a Ubuntu zealot!!!! Talking almost about nothing else except for coverage of the Polish election and getting the internet (but no wireless) at home!

November
During November my zealot-like habits had died back slightly to a more healthy level (remember competitors are always good in any market). WordPress was upgraded and there were some humoristic posts mixed in. Two main pieces of Technology news were that Skype released a new version for Linux with webcam support and Gmail upgraded their email service. There were also the first signs of winter in Krakow with one slight snowfall, than another more heavier one and then a major one. I was on an aeroplane coming back from a business trip to London that had to land in the major snowfall. I wrote an interesting, if long post about landing for the first time in snow.

December
So far December had been a quite month with regards to blogging. There was a comical video on Youtube about the impending Web 2.0 bubble that could burst and I managed to get Linux emulating another version of Linux (the distro that comes with the XO laptop). December is also the month I reached 100 Spam comments since installing WordPress back in April.

So that is the round up of the year 2007 for Hugh’s Space. I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2008!
